London’s Department Stores: Why, When and What to Shop at Each Distinctive Store

Three department stores that capture my attention has to be Harrods, Selfridges, and Liberty London, each radiating a unique heritage of their own.

Harrods

Harrods is marked by its status as a world-renowned luxury department store, established in 1849, symbolising British tradition, luxury and quality. The Harrods customer has a discerning taste for high-end products and an appreciation for a refined shopping experience. If I were to shop at Harrods, it would most definitely be for occasion wear.

The design of Harrods store is pristine, you can't help but feel like a princess wandering through a palace (main character moment). A day could effortlessly be spent in their shoe department alone, where you could luxuriate on plush velvet sofas, trying on elegant, Cinderella-like shoes to your heart's content.

Selfridges

Selfridges is rooted in innovation and retail excellence since its founding by Harry Gordon Selfridge in 1908. Pioneering window displays, Selfridges has become an iconic part of London's shopping landscape, recognised for blending tradition with modernity.

Seeking both quality and style, Selfridges blends traditional values with contemporary tastes. I am drawn to the store's diverse range of products, from luxury brands to trendy, cutting-edge fashion.

These Good American parachute trousers have been on my wish-list for a while now; they're a building block for any outfit. I would pair these trousers with a cool tee; Miaou is recognised for its bold prints and patterns. Make a statement with these Golden Goose glittery trainers; the low heel adds that extra edginess to the look. Don't overlook the men's section when shopping, either – this Sandro bomber I've chosen is a men's piece, and you can often find exceptional oversized items here. You can never go wrong by adding a pair of chunky hoop earrings (these are from Missoma) and a timeless piece such as the Panthère de Cartier watch to your outfit. Lastly, I stumbled upon this Dior saddle bag from Reselfridges, Selfridges' pre-loved designer section, and it's an unquestionably fabulous find.

Liberty London

Founded in 1875 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, with the Tudor revival flagship building opening in 1924. Liberty holds its reputation for artistic expression, creativity, and support for both established and emerging designers. One of the standout elements of Liberty London's heritage is its timeless and quintessentially British floral and graphic prints.

Shopping at Liberty feels like stepping into a different part of the world, filled with beautiful, exotic goods. The store continues to be a place where luxury, quality, and a sense of discovery come together, connecting the past and the present with a unique style that transcends trends.
